I am so happy and excited to bring to GASP my latest “WEST COAST UPDATE” with my good friend, and IFBB Master’s Classic Physique pro, George Thibault. He and I met at Gold’s Gym, Venice and struck an immediate friendship, as he is just one of those people that is always smiling and offering kind words to everyone. I watched him compete in many shows, and always in amazing shape - but at age 53 he put it all together and earned pro status at the 2019 NPC Team Universe.**

ERIC:** Let’s go back to the beginning. When did you starting lifting weights and what got you into the activity?**

I first started lifting weights when I was only about 10 years old. My mother signed me up for boxing classes at the YMCA and while there I noticed they had a weight room. When I saw what the guys looked like who were lifting, I knew that is something I wanted to do.

ERIC:** Did you want to want to compete from the outset, or did that goal come later on**

Yes, I wanted to compete right away! I think I was only about 15 years old when I did my first contest.

ERIC:** What was your first show, how did it go? Did anyone help you prepare?

My first show was the teenage Los Angeles and I had no clue what I was doing! I was pretty much on my own with no mentor or coach. I had no idea how to diet and did not know I was supposed to do cardio to lose fat. As I remember there were only 5 of us up there and I got dead last.

 How many shows have you done in your career approximately? Does any particular show or shows, and/or victories stand out?**

Honestly, I have no idea how many shows I have done – although I have certainly done a lot. I have actually taken many breaks from competition during the years, but always got the bug to come back. Obviously the show where I achieved pro status (the 2019 NPC Team Universe) stands out the most. One of these days I plan to dig out all of my trophies and take a photo of them all.

ERIC: How did it feel to finally achieve that IFBB pro card?**

When I heard my name called and knew I was finally a pro it was an incredible relief. I literally felt the weight lifted from my shoulders.

ERIC:** Was it just a crazy experience to step onstage as a pro?**

My first pro show was a great experience because I did it with both of my training partners, so we had a blast. I entered knowing I’d be much older than everybody else, but had the goal of looking my personal best and beating some of the younger guys – and I did!

ERIC:** You are a personal trainer and will also sometimes coach other athletes. What are the main things you try to teach your students about training and the sport?

Yes I make my living as a personal trainer/coach and I love every minute of it. The main thing I try to teach my students is to always have fun and to always consider their health first. I tell them that if they are not enjoying it and loving it, they should not be doing it.

 Which bodybuilders have always inspired you? Who do you think was the best Mr. Olympia of all time?**

This is a tough one for me as there are so many greats in the sport. However, if I had to choose, I would say Lee Labrada because he physique was incredible from every angle and at the same time looks “attainable.” When it comes to the best Mr. Olympia that would be either Ronnie Coleman or Lee Haney.

ERIC: You and I met at “The Mecca of Bodybuilding,” Gold’s Gym, Venice. You trained there long before I did. Who are some of the big names you have gotten to train with over the years?**

Yes, we did meet at “The Mecca,” which was filled with so many awesome people and bodybuilders. Actually, I never really trained with many of the really big-name pros, although I was friendly with all of them. Some gave me tips as I moved along in the sport, and sometimes we had lunch at the Firehouse – which was always fun. I did once do a little arm training with Dexter Jackson and of course I trained along with you and Silvio Samuel a couple of times. Even though I never did a workout with them, it was amazing to watch guys like Flex Wheeler and Chris Cormier train with Charles and get ready for their biggest shows.

ERIC:** You have been in this sport for a long time, both training and competing, and in your 50’s you keep improving. What do you owe your longevity to?

Just as I stress “health first” with my clients, I also apply that to myself, which has kept me in the sport for all this time. Although I treat bodybuilding extremely seriously I do not take any stupid risks or push any aspect of the prep for shows too far. I also never train with crazy weights or use sloppy form so as to keep injuries at bay and my joints intact.

ERIC:** What are your goals moving forward? Will you continue competing, or are you winding your career down?**

Yes I am slowly winding my career down. I’m tired brother! I am most likely going to do one or two more shows in 2021 and then hang up the posing trunks. Of course I will always be a bodybuilder and always stay in top shape – that never stops!

ERIC:** George, you truly are one of my favorite people. You are my brother in iron. You always have kind words for everyone and act as a cheerleader for all other bodybuilders. And for that, I thank you. Anyone you wish to thank for contributing to your success?**

Thanks Eric. Yeah, you are right in that I try to always encourage everyone, and I am willing to help in any way I can. I think it is important we support each other in this sport, and recognize the hard work, discipline and sacrifice of everyone in the gym. Just by telling someone how good they look can give them a huge boost, and everyone needs that now and again. As for who to thank, that would have to be my mother. She brought me to the YMCA to keep me out of trouble, which is where my fire for the sport was lit. Of course I must also thank my wife, Connie, who has always supported me through everything.

ERIC:** Wow, that was awesome my friend. You are one of a kind and a true gentleman. And in fact, you may have inspired me to go after my pro card as well!

West Coast Update With Eric Broser - George Thibault

I met Rashaad Brooks at Gold’s Gym, Venice and immediately noticed two important things.

First was that he had great genetic potential for this sport, as he has naturally great lines, a small waist, beautiful V-taper and well-shaped muscle bellies. And second, that he was humble, passionate and hungry for knowledge! We became instant friends, and, in my mind, I had hoped that one day I could take him fully under my wing and coach him into the pro ranks – and beyond. Happily, my wish came true as I have been preparing him for the NPC USA Championships for the last 9 weeks (as I write this), and I consider it a blessing to work with such a tremendous athlete – and even more importantly, a true gentleman. I do not know where he will place in his first attempt at earning IFBB status, but after you read this interview, I am sure you will feel just as I do – that Rashaad is already a champion!

Such a pleasure to be doing this interview with you for GASP! Let’s start with the basics. Where are you from, and where do you live now?

Rashaad: I’m honored to do this interview with you Eric. I’m from Los Angeles, CA and still

When did you start lifting weights? What got you into training?

Rashaad: I started lifting at 14 years old (off and on), but began training seriously, and with purpose when I was around 21. I was always a lean/skinny kid but got tired of that look and wanted to build some muscle through weight training.

What or who got you interested in competing? Did you have a mentor in the beginning Are there any bodybuilders that you look up to and perhaps try to emulate?

Rashaad: My friend Moe Burgess got me into competing. Moe was definitely my mentor at the beginning of my journey and continues to push me to this day. As for bodybuilders I admire and look to for inspiration I would have say Frank Zane, Rich Gaspari, and Lee Labrada. There are so many in this sport that I admire and respect as athletes, but I really associate with Rich and Lee, mostly because they have smaller structures similar to myself. When it comes to Zane, I just love his mindset and perspective towards health and fitness in general.

You and I were first introduced at Gold’s Gym, Venice (which is sadly now closed). For most of us who were lucky enough to train there, it was an honor and privilege. What was it like for you to step through those doors each day and to pursue your passion amongst some of the very best in the sport?

Rashaad: Yeah bro, it’s so sad what is happening to the Mecca. I just pray it comes back. I’m

truly blessed to say I have personally seen its last days, for now at least, and got the opportunity to train there. I remember walking through Gold’s doors that first day and literally feeling in awe of the place. I felt the incredible energy immediately. I walked around the whole gym and couldn’t believe how amazing the Mecca was – with so many rooms and the variety of equipment. I remember saying to myself, “even the old people look good here!”

Eric_: When it comes to competing, you have chosen to make your mark in the Classic Physique

division. What made you choose this path as opposed to open bodybuilding?_

Rashaad: I chose classic because it emulates old school bodybuilding - the “golden era.” Plus, I assessed my own physique as I was progressing and realized that I don’t have the genetics or structure for the open class. Trying to hold that much mass would destroy my lines, which I am not willing to do. Maybe one day I could compete in the 212-division, but that’s the highest muscular bodyweight I think my genetics would allow me.

I believe 2020 marked your first victory in the NPC, correct? How did it feel to hear your name called as the victor?

Rashaad: Yes, my brother, my first NPC victory occurred this year at the NPC Cal State. It felt so incredible to have my grind and effort rewarded fairly.

As I mentioned, you and I met at Gold’s and quickly became friends. Every time I saw you, I

tried to push you and make sure you were giving your workouts your all. However, right after your win at the NPC Cal State you asked me to coach you for the USA. This was a thrill for me because I always felt as if you have pro potential and I wanted to help bring it out. How has this prep under my guidance been different than what you have done in the past?

Rashaad: Yes, we connected instantly, and you always to the time to drop some

on me in the gym - and I’m thankful for that. Under your guidance for the USA, I learned

some more things about my body, which certainly was for the better. I’m used to doing six meals training days and five on rest days, but you bumped me to 7 and 6 respectively. Right away I noticed that I had more energy, my muscles remained fuller, and my metabolism started flying. I am definitely coming into the show with both better conditioning and more mass.

You are without a doubt one of the hardest working and most passionate athletes I have

ever known/worked with! Please tell everyone out there what drives you – what makes you bust your ass every single day.

Rashaad: Thanks man - I do my best to always go “balls to the wall” when at the gym. But the

straight up truth is that I just love training. I fell in love with it immediately because of results. With consistency and intensity comes gains. When I see people, who knew me when I was younger and very skinny, they always ask how on earth I go to the point I am at now. I just tell them that once I started, I never stopped!

What do you love most about this sport? Aside from creating an incredible physique, what has this journey done for your life in general? How has it impacted you?

Rashaad: As for this sport I love that it helps build character and just gives you a better attitude about life all around. I also love the people and the energy in the gym. It’s like a big brotherhood, where we all push and support each other – which I just love. I feel like the sport itself welcomed me with open arms, and that I was made to train, diet and be onstage showing my results. I know I belong.

This has been a very difficult year for all of us. The fact that you are even competing is a testament to your ability to overcome adversity. How have you managed to navigate through everything that has been thrown at you in 2020?

Rashaad: Brother, oh my Lord - this year been a total rollercoaster. The NPC Cal State was

postponed twice, but I refused to stop. I think that the real key for me was that no matter what was thrown at me I always remained positive and did not let anything really stress me out. Remember, there is always a solution to any problem. You may have to just work harder sometimes for what you want, but if the opportunity is there, you must take advantage of it and make it happen!

As we do this interview, we are still about 10 days out from the USA Championships. It

is obvious that you are by far in the best shape of your life, so regardless of where you place, you are already a champion – at least, that is how I see it. Whether you turn pro or not this year, I know in my heart that you will soon be a proud member of the IFBB. Tell us what your goals are for the future. What does Rashaad wish to achieve in the sport?

Rashaad: Honestly Eric, more than anything, I just want to help, inspire and motivate people

I know what an incredibly gracious person you are, so I am sure you have some people

you’d like to thank. The floor is yours…

Rashaad: Thanks coach, you’re amazing as well. I want to thank my good friend and brother, Moe Burgess, for bringing me into this community/sport and accepting me with open arms. West Coast Update With Eric Broser - Rashaad Brooks

I am thrilled to present to the GASP community another interview with one of my star students, and veteran GASP ambassador, Mark Durando. He had quite an exciting year in 2020 and established himself as a real “force” in the NPC Classic Physique division. I sat down with him to discuss how the 2020 competitive season turned out and what is ahead for 2021.

 So, this was some big year for you! A victory in both bodybuilding and classic physique at the NPC West Coast Classic, and then a 5th place in a stacked lineup at the USA’s! How do you feel?

 Yes, this was a big year for me as I left my “mark” at both the NPC West Coast Classic and the USA. Earning first place in both Classic Physique and bodybuilding (at the WCC) was a huge accomplishment for me personally. I have placed in the top 5 several times, but never earned a victory – let alone two at a single show! As for the USA, when I was in first call out, I knew I had a shot at a top placing and fought as hard as possible. When I heard my name called in 5th, I was literally overjoyed!

 What major improvements do you feel you made in 2020 that launched you to this higher level as an athlete in the NPC?

 The MAJOR improvements I feel I made would be my combination of size and condition all around. I have been bigger, but not as ripped, and also very hard, but not as full. This time I had the best combination of each. I added size to key areas like my back, chest and shoulders, while at the same time reducing the size of my waist.

 Looking back, you really began preparing for shows from early 2020, and literally dieted all year long because competitions kept getting cancelled and moved. How did you manage

 Honestly, it was the toughest thing I have ever done in my bodybuilding career. Every time the WCC was canceled and moved to a later date, it really tested my mental toughness. It was frustrating having a plan with my coach and then constantly having to alter it. However, I knew I could not and would not quit because I was incredibly determined to crush my best ever look onstage.

 The first time you competed at the NPC USA, you did so in the bodybuilding division, and placed 13th out of about two dozen competitors. This past December you jumped into the top 5 in the classic division. First of all, how exciting was it to hear your name for the initial callout at prejudging? And second, are you leaving the bodybuilding division entirely and focusing only on classic?

 Oh man, I was on fire when they called me to the line-up for first call outs. At that moment, I was on cloud nine and already feeling like I had won by just getting to that point. As of now, yes, I will focus entirely on Classic Physique not stopping until I get my pro card and then making it one day onto that Olympia stage.

 David Bourlet, who is the content manager and videographer for Jay Cutler TV mentioned to you while filming an episode of “B Built by Broser,” that you made more improvements in 2020 than you have in any previous year. With all the craziness – gym closings, food shortages, etc. – how did you manage this?

 In my mind, the year 2020 came down to three options: 1) Throw in the towel entirely

and focus on the following year, 2) Keep going while allowing the events of the year keep me from being my very best, or 3) SUCK IT UP AND PUSH FORWARD with 100% drive, discipline, dedication and focus – simply letting nothing stand in my way. Obviously, I chose number 3. Besides, you (my coach) would not have let me pick any other option except for the third!

 Looking at your posing routine at the USA this year, it is obvious that you work extra hard on this aspect of preparation. Who are your inspirations as far as posing go, and why

do you feel presentation onstage is so important even though the posing round is not really judged?

 One thing you have always taught me, and that I personally feel, is that posing is an art, and should be treated as such – and this goes especially for the Classic Physique division. I have many inspirations in this arena, but the first names that come to mind are Lee Labrada, Mohamed Makkawy, Bob Paris and Frank Zane. I believe that this sport is one of passion, and that posing is the most profound way we can show the world what all the hard work is for

 So, the Olympia has just recently passed, and Chris Bumstead repeated as the winner. Do you feel he deserved it? Who do you think the biggest threat to his crown will be in 2021?

 First, I have to say that Chris (Bumstead) showed us all why he is Mr. Olympia. He made huge improvements between 2019 and 2020 Olympia, and really is an incredible representation of what “Classic” should look like. As for 2021, I think Chris’s biggest threat would be Terrence Ruffin, because he is an amazing poser and another great example of what this division is all about.

 Talking about 2021, what goals have you set for yourself? What do you want to improve upon in terms of your physique? Additionally, do you feel confident that you have a shot of

 For me, I need to focus mostly on width. I will work hard to widen both my shoulders and back so as to create a more impressive “X-frame.” I also want to continue to “refine” my physique, bringing about even more detail and maturity. And without a doubt, I want to bring a posing routine that will have the audience on their feet!

 Just like myself, you basically “live” in GASP clothing! As an athlete and ambassador what new things would you like to see GASP come out with this year?

 Oh wow, that’s a tough one. When I think about it, I would love to see GASP come out with more styles of hats and some unique patterns for all of their clothes. But number one on my list would be some GASP sneakers for the gym! That would be so cool!

 Final question (for now). If you and I got to visit Destination Dallas for a single workout, what body part would you want to crush while there?

 Ha! I knew that would be your choice! Thank you Mark for taking the time to talk to me. And as your coach, all I can say is --- LET’S DO THIS!

West Coast Update With Eric Broser - Mark Durando

Posters, car foliation, decor jobs, printed material, 3D logos, signing cards, showcases etc. With 22 years in the industry and self-employed for the past 12 years, Brani has a good eye for everything. Of these +8 years, we have had the privilege of working with Brani and he has helped us with all sorts of missions. Brani himself has been active in the training and fitness industry since he was a teenager and has competed in both bench press and bodybuilding.

My best memories with GASP & Better Bodies when it comes to work are definitely when I was involved in creating your booths at events. It was a good and intense challenge where I had to be really solution-oriented. So much fun and it always ended up really well.

As a young and hungry person in the sport, I remember how I flipped through the "Bodybuilding & Power Sports" magazines. Inspired by the athletes on the front page and all

the interviews. Saw these ads with athletes and well-built physiques, wearing Better Bodies. And I remembered that I thought - one day I will also be in these magazines! On the cover, having photoshoots and doing interviews . I started training when I was 16-17 years old and at 19 I took silver in bench press. I competed in this until I turned 20 years old. My training took a slightly different turn and between 2009-2013 I competed in Bodybuilding.

In 2010, I was called to your office to talk about a potential athlete collaboration. We ended up talking about everything else in life! We never got to a deal, I probably let that slip away, but it was also at the same time as I invested everything in building my company. Our collaboration thus took a slightly different turn and it has been fun to have the opportunity to work with you over the years!

And yes, I have saved those magazines of course - where I front the magazine! With spreads, pictures and interviews with me. Quite cool and a nice thing to look back on and what you have achieved!

Q. So give us a little background on you. How old are you? Where are you from? What do you do?

A. Sure, I am 29 years old from Bakersfield, California.  I am an online coach for fitness competitors and lifestyle clients.  I also do some in person training at the National Academy of Strength and Power, a local gym here in Bakersfield.

Q. When did you first start working out and what motivated you in the first place?

A. I started consistently working out in 2009, which was the summer going into my senior year of high school.  It’s hard to think back and pin point exactly what was my motivation, however.  I’m sure it partly had something to do with looking cool in order to impress girls - but I remember that a portion of my friends on the football team started putting on a good amount of size around that time as well. Obviously I did not want to get left behind!

Q. I know you are a well-respected personal trainer/coach in the Bakersfield, CA area. What do you enjoy most about your work? What are the main ideals you try to instill in your clients?

A. I appreciate that.  The most enjoyable part of coaching and training is helping people reach their goals. I want to see all of my clients improve and get better; whether that is physically, mentally, or emotionally.  With each of my clients I try to instill discipline, the ability to train with intensity, and most importantly, patience.  I want them to understand that building a fit, strong, muscular and healthy body takes time, dedication, and a solid work ethic.

Q. In terms of your work, what eventual aspirations do you have? Do you want to own a gym? How do you envision expanding your career?

A. Man, I would love to own a gym.  I'm a “gear head” when it comes to workout equipment, so I have (in my mind) all of these specific pieces of equipment that I’d like to have -  one’s that you rarely see in typical commercial gyms. When I figure out a way to profit from this kind of gym, then I will make it happen! For now, I will keep grinding and bettering myself as a coach. I want to work hard to build up my clientele and start working with more competitor as well.

Q. You have built a very symmetrical, muscular and proportionate physique. Are there any bodybuilders who serve as your inspiration?

A. Thank you Eric. Those are exactly the words I’d use to describe my “goal physique.”  There are a lot of bodybuilders who inspire me. Some that come to mind are  Dorian Yates, Flex

Lewis, Jay Cutler, and Jordan Peters. I’d say that these guys are at the top of my list - but not necessarily because of their physiques, per se, but more so for their work ethic, and what each has accomplished in the fitness/bodybuilding industry.

Q. Tell me a bit about your philosophy on training. Do you favor heavy weights and low reps? Or do you prefer medium to high rep ranges? Are you a high or low volume lifter? Is your form/technique very strict or do you like to utilize a “looser” style of performing your movements?

A. As you might assume from the list of bodybuilders I mentioned above, I subscribe and

firmly believe in, lower volume training, moderate frequency, along with high intensity. This usually means that my training split is always some variation of Push/Pull/Legs in order to

achieve the necessary frequency per muscle group. Strict form is a must in my training! While there are times I will allow for looser form, this would only occur on the last rep or two of a working set (when strict rep failure has been reached).

Q. I know you have competed once before. What show was it? What division did you enter? How did you do?

A. I competed at the 2019 NPC Muscle Contest Excalibur in Classic Physique division. I placed 9th out of nineteen competitors in Open Class B. I didn’t peak well for the show, but regardless, I had a great time. The experience of prepping myself for the show and being up on that stage was one that brought me a lot of joy. I felt very accomplished afterward even if I did not place as well as I had hoped. I had actually planned to compete at the Excalibur way

back in 2012 in the men's physique division, but never ended up going through with it. So coming back and finishing what I started really felt amazing.

Q. What did you like and dislike most about preparing for competition? Tell me more about the experience of being onstage?

A. When I decided to compete, I was very nervous about being on stage. I’m not normally

someone who wants to be in the spotlight, but surprisingly enough, I really enjoyed being on stage. What I liked best about prepping and competing was the strict schedule I had to adhere to in order to get everything done day to day. I really thrive on structure. As far as dislikes, may only complaint would be about how fatigued I felt once the show started getting close. You know, that level of lethargy that makes it hard just to get out of a chair!

Q. What is up next? Are you going to prepare for any shows in 2021? What do you feel are the main areas you need to improve upon?

A. Great question Eric. A lot will be determined by what's going on with the pandemic. However, I definitely would like to compete again at the NPC Excalibur this December. Other then nailing my peak and bringing up overall size, I need to build up back thickness,

hamstrings, and biceps. The other aspect of competing that I need to definitely improve upon is my posing and presentation. I would be lying if said I prioritized this very important aspect of competing during my last prep. I won’t make that mistake again.

Q. Where does Eric Frapwell see himself in 5 years in terms of the bodybuilding/fitness industry?

A. In 5 years I want to be even more established as a coach and trainer, with a far bigger following. A lot of my passion is in education, so I'd like to be able to travel and give seminars on nutrition, training, and supplementation. I still want to be training intensely, progressing and building my physique exactly the way I want. I could also very well still be competing. I love the sport, and getting on stage is a great outlet to showcase the hard work put I in at the gym.

West Coast Update With Eric Broser - Eric Frapwell

I have spent the better part of my life as a gym owner, bodybuilder, trainer and coach -and have lived in NY, Florida and now Southern California (since 2011). I have worked with,

and trained with, some amazing athletes, but ever since I ventured west, everything has reached an entirely new level. And while I have had the honor (since making Marina del Rey my home – 10 minutes from Gold’s Venice) to coach many IFBB pro’s, I also have had the opportunity to assist so many awesome amateurs to progress through the “ranks.” Mark Durando is one such athlete.

Several years ago Mark came to me - big, but overweight, and without much shape – and asked if I could help him become a successful competitive bodybuilder. The potential I recognized in him was not necessarily “physical,” but shined most brightly via his passion, dedication, discipline and true “coach-ability.”

Just recently I had a back workout with Mark in his hometown, who is still training his rear off while under quarantine, as he continues to pursue the possibility of competing in 2020. After our session, I sat down with him and asked him a series of questions, so you can learn more about this rising classic physique competitor, who also is a long time GASP ambassador.

How old are you and where are you from? Where do you reside now?

I am 30 years old and born and raised in Bakersfield, CA. – where I still reside.

I got into bodybuilding after I graduated from Personal Training School up in Dublin, Ca. in 2014.

My first show took place 2014 here in Bakersfield. It was a local NGA show that was drug-tested. Because I already had a foundation of muscle from powerlifting and sports I was

4. When did you and I start working together and what made you contact me?

I started working with you (Merlin) in 2015 as I wanted to take my body to the next level with the guidance from a real professional coach. I had seen what you had done with other clients and read about your methods and knew I had to work with you.

5. How did I change your diet and training from what you were used to?

You had me do a 180 turn around to my whole way of working out, AND most of all my nutrition, which was a huge game changer, especially with my body type.

6. What is the biggest show you have done?

The biggest show I’ve ever done was the 2018 NPC USA - my first ever National level show. This was the best experience one could ever ask for as an athlete. While I did not make the top 6, I looked around and knew I belonged up there.

7. What show are your working towards now?

I am hoping to do the NPC West Coast Classic promoted by Center Podium. This would be my 3rd appearance at this show, which is one of my all-time favorites.

8. What made you choose classic bodybuilding?

I chose classic bodybuilding because I LOVE the look and the presentation of the athletes. Lee Labrada and Mohamed Makkawy are my main inspirations – both for the look of their physiques and their incredible posing routines.

9. What are your goals for this year and in the future?

My goals for this year are to place top 5 at the West Coast Classic and to once again compete at the NPC USA (if it is held) – hopefully improving my placing.

10. What advice do you have for others that want to get into competing?

The advice I feel is the most important are two simple things: TRUST IN THE PROCESS and YOUR COACH.
